WHAT IS QUINTET?

  • QUINTET is a Team grappling Match. The Team wins a QUINTET match, not the individual.

  • Matches consist of two teams facing each other in a “winner stays on” elimination format.

  • Matches begin with one fighter from each team competing. This is called a “round”. When a submission is scored, the round is over and the defeated fighter is out of the match. The winning fighter immediately faces the next member of the opposing team in a new round.

  • The match continues, round by round, fighter by fighter until one team is completely eliminated.

QUINTET RULES

  • 6-minute matches

  • 3-minute matches with 30lb difference. Smaller fighter has option of starting in mount or on the back

  • Only ways to win are submission or disqualification

  • Match ruled a draw if no finish during allotted time

  • Draw means both fighters are out

  • Winner stays and fights the next fighter from the opposing team

  • If the last match ends in a draw both teams will elect a team member to participate in an EBI back control overtime

  • Team members and order are preset before event starts

  • Teams will be drawn at random

  • You will be on a team with members not from your academy

STANCE ON TRANSGENDER COMPETITORS

Stance on transgender competitors:

Arroyo Grappling Academy allows trans athletes to compete in their preferred gender category so long as they have been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for at least 24 months. Trans athletes' weights must still fall into the proper category without exception (identical to non-trans athletes).

HRT for trans women involves taking testosterone blockers and supplemental estrogen, which after 3-6 months significantly decreases muscle mass, and increases body fat (MayoClinic). These well-documented effects, along with the existence of strict weight classes, the legality of anabolic steroids in the sport, and the well-known ability of jiu-jitsu technique to overcome differences in size and strength have informed our stance on the issue.

We will not be offering refunds for competitors unaware of this rule. It is well-documented on both the signup form and on this website.

We protect the health information of our competitors, it is not ours to disclose.
